If your dog loves getting brushed, nails clipped and tooth brushing, lucky you! But if they don’t, don’t worry, we have effective tips to teach your dog to enjoy grooming! Let’s start!
How to train your dog to get brushed
Getting brushed is the easiest task on this list, many dogs enjoy getting brushed. But not all can enjoy this process, and if they didn’t get used to getting brushed when they were a puppy, they may be suspicious when they first encounter getting brushed.
Start brushing slowly and with positive, non-threatening interactions, this way is more likely to result in a smoother grooming routine. To make brushing a regular thing here’s some tips you can apply:
Make it a positive experience for your dog, use a lot of praise and positive rewards.
Start small, be gentle and show them this process won’t hurt.
Use distractions or rewards.
Be consistent, brush your dog daily.
How to train your dog to nail clipping
Just like brushing, give your dog some time to get used to nail clipping. Let your dog touch the nail clipper before you touch their paws with them. And make sure you don’t cut too close, this could cause pain and/or bleeding. If you have a bad experience, it will affect future experiences.
How to train your dog to tooth brushing
We all know our dog needs regular tooth brushing, but how regular we do it? Tooth brushing is necessary for your dog, you probably heard you should brush your dog’s tooth from your vet a couple of times. And these tips will make this process easier.
Firstly, start with your finger. Put a dab of peanut butter or baby food on your finger and gently bring it to your dog’s mouth. Rub a tooth or two with your fingers, your dog will become more accepting of this. Then, slowly brush their teeth with your fingers. Then repeat this with the toothbrush, put a small amount of peanut butter or baby food on your dog’s toothbrush and when our dog becomes comfortable with the toothbrush, switch to doggy toothpaste.
